Brazil has become an increasingly cheap travel destination because of the recent drop in value of the Brazilian Real. In September of 2015, both the Dollar and the Euro reached their highest level against the Real since 1993, at an exchange rate of 4.18 and 4.67 to 1 respectively, (Trading Economics).
As a result of a growing economy in the United States, a relatively stable financial situation in the European Union and a massive recession in Brazil, coupled with the highly publicized corruption scandal at the state controlled oil giant Petrobras, the Dollar has gained 47% against the Real in the last 12 months alone, with the Euro’s gains in the same period trailing only slightly. The economic forecast for Brazil is not expected to get better for at least two more years as both Fitch and Standard & Poors have downgraded the country’s credit rating to the dreaded junk bond status, BB+ (Forbes).
Although this is not great news for Brazil’s economy, this does make it suddenly a cheap travel destination as accommodations, meals, transportation, city tours and other tourist activities are affordable for those with Euros and Dollars.
To try to understand how affordable it has become; here in Natal where I live, at the restaurant Mangai, you can get a delicious Brazilian BBQ dinner complete with Filet Mignon, your choice of sides/salads, drinks and deserts/coffee for the same price as a Subway sandwich combo, about $11 USD. Just a 90 minute car ride from Natal, one of my favorite places in the world, sits the idyllic beach town, Praia da Pipa. Once there, just 50 meters from the main road and 150 meters from the beach is the cozy b&b, Pousada Cavalo Marinho. Here you can get a room with AC, mini fridge, LCD TV, porch with a hammock, sea view, outdoor swimming pool, onsite restaurant, including a tropical Brazilian breakfast for under $40 USD per night for two people. That is $20 USD per person!
Take advantage of the favorable exchange rate while it lasts and book your affordable Brazil vacation as it has become a cheap travel destination.1
